Common Lock Types in Manchester

At Lockdown Locksmith Manchester, I speak with customers daily across Manchester and the surrounding areas. It’s easy to forget that not everyone knows the names of the locks on their doors — or how to describe them. So here’s a simple guide to the most common types of locks you’ll find in Manchester homes and businesses, with photos available on request to help you identify yours quickly.

Euro Cylinder Locks (uPVC and composite doors)

Euro cylinders are by far the most common lock I deal with as a Manchester locksmith — especially in UPVC and composite front or back doors.

These locks come in two common types:

  • Key & Key: Key required on both sides.

  • Key & Thumb Turn: Key on the outside, turn knob on the inside (often used in flats or HMOs for fire safety).

Unfortunately, standard euro cylinders are vulnerable to a method used by burglars called lock snapping. This can be prevented by upgrading to an anti-snap cylinder, which I supply and install as part of my lock upgrade service.

  • ✔️ Ideal for: uPVC and composite doors

  • 🔐 Upgrade option: Anti-snap cylinders in standard, 1-star and 3-star versions

Mortice (Mortise) Locks – Wooden Door Security

Mortice locks are most often found in wooden front doors, back doors, side entrances, and even metal containers or gates. The lock mechanism is fitted inside the door, making it more secure and less visible.

They come in:

  • 2 Lever (low security, internal doors)

  • 3 Lever (medium security)

  • 5 Lever (higher security, should be British Standard for insurance purposes)

  • Look for the BS3621 British Standard mark, which is required by many home insurers for locks fitted to external wooden doors.

✔️ Ideal for: Wooden doors

Recommended: 5-lever British Standard mortice lock

Night Latches (Often Called “Yale Locks”)

The Night Latch is another very common lock on wooden doors across Manchester. Often referred to as a "Yale lock" (though **Yale** is the brand, not the type), this lock includes a round keyhole on the outside and a latch with a knob and snib (locking switch) on the inside.

Night latches come in several versions:

  • Standard (non-deadlocking)

  • Deadlocking

  • Auto Deadlocking

  • Double Locking

For maximum protection, especially on front doors, I recommend the **British Standard Night Latch**, which includes enhanced anti-drill and anti-pick protection.

✔️ Ideal for: Wooden doors (typically main entry)
🚪 Safety tip: Use alongside a 5-lever mortice lock for insurance compliance

Still Unsure About The Type Of Lock On Your Manchester Door?

I also offer a free security assessment to help identify weak points in the locks and security of homes and commercial properties.
